Vista windows sidebar disappeared

I am new to Vista. I just got my computer and had someone come over and transfer data and settings from my old XP system. After the transfer my sidebar disappeared, but more importantly, all of the cool gadgets that came installed are GONE. What happened? I have an unnatural attachment to these far out gadgets that are now seemingly gone forever.
